Women's Lacrosse Outscored by Western New England, 23-11

CLERMONT, FL-Western New England grabbed an 11-5 halftime lead and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's lacrosse team, 23-11, in the second and final match of their 2013 spring trip at the National Training Center Thursday evening.

The Golden Bears took a 6-0 lead before junior midfielder Taylor Corsano (Bourne, MA/Bourne) put the Corsairs on the board with 21:11 left in the first half.  Senior attacker Brittney Enos (East Falmouth, MA/Falmouth) scored three times and senior defender Selina Houghton (Billerica, MA/Shawsheen HS) added a goal as UMass Dartmouth cut Western New England's lead to six goals at halftime.

Enos scored the first goal of the second half to make it 11-6, but the Golden Bears scored three times in succession before UMD scored again. Corsano and Enos accounted for three consecutive Corsair goals to make it 15-9 with 21:06 remaining, but UMD could come no closer.

Enos led the Corsair attack with seven goals, while Corsano had three. Megan Doyle led Western New England with five goals, while Taylor Scialdone added four. Senior midfielder Denise Gates (Feeding Hills, MA/ Agawam HS) led UMD with three assists.  

"We fought hard tonight and handled a physical game well," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Sarah Booker. "Western New England is a strong team, and we are using the game as preparation for our conference opponents. Over the course of the week, we have grown as a team."

WNE outshot UMass Dartmouth, 48-24. Senior goaltender Angelina Donovan (Medford, MA/Medford HS) made 11 saves for the Corsairs, while Emily Castleman made seven stops for the Golden Bears.

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 2-2 with the defeat, while Western New England improved to 5-2 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Worcester State on Tuesday. The Golden Bears will host Gordon next Wednesday.
