Baseball Sweeps Twinbill From Becker By 8-2, 11-1 Finals At NEBC

NORTHBORO, Mass. --  Senior JR DiSarcina (Barnstable, Mass.) rapped out five hits on the day, as UMass Dartmouth swept a non-league college baseball doubleheader from Becker by scores of 8-2 in the opener and 11-1 in the nightcap in games played Saturday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex.

The visiting Corsairs (3-0) jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead in the opener on senior Tucker Hetherman’s (Webster, Mass.) two-run homer and an RBI double by senior Erick Ramirez (Boston, Mass.), but the host Hawks (0-2) got two runs back in the bottom of the frame on homers from junior Coby Hussey (Claremont, N.H.) and Noah Rivera (New Bedford, Mass.).  UMass Dartmouth erupted for five tallies in the top of second to close out the scoring, as senior Mike Knell (Dennis, Mass.) drew a bases loaded walk and came home on a three-run double off the bat of freshman DJ Perron (Swansea, Mass.), who then scored on a wild pitch.

DiSarcina and Hetherman each had two hits as part of an eight-hit attack in the lid-lifter for UMass Dartmouth in support of graduate student Robbie Carrillo (Melrose, Mass.), who scattered three hits and fanned eight to pick up the victory.  Freshman Jacob Asdot (Jacksonville, Fla.) was tagged for six hits and seven earned runs over three innings in his collegiate debut on the mound for Becker.

The Corsairs scored all 11 of their runs in the first four innings of the nightcap, as senior Nate Tellier (Attleboro, Mass.) belted a three-run homer in the first frame and added an RBI double as part of a three-run second inning rally that included RBI singles off the bats of Ramirez and sophomore Kyle Denis (Warwick, R.I.).  Run-scoring doubles by Denis and senior Nick Andrews (Raynham, Mass.) sandwiched sacrifice flies from Tellier and Perron in the third for UMass Dartmouth, which received an RBI infield single from DiSarcina in the fourth.

Tellier and DiSarcina paced a 14-hit attack with three hits each in the second contest for the Corsairs, as Hetherman allowed an unearned run on a passed ball over four hitless innings with four strikeouts to pick up the win.  Sophomore Tevon Johnson (New Bedford, Mass.) allowed eight hits and 10 runs while fanning four over 2 2/3 innings of work in the nightcap for Becker.

UMass Dartmouth heads to Auburndale, Fla. on Friday afternoon to begin an eight-game trip to the Russ Matt Invitational against Albion, with first pitch set for 12:45 pm.
