Ice Hockey Suffers Season-Opening 4-3 Overtime Setback At Stonehill

FOXBORO, Mass. --  Junior Kayser Raei (Boston, Mass.) scored the golden goal with 48 seconds remaining in overtime to lead Stonehill to a 4-3 non-league college ice hockey victory over UMass Dartmouth in the season opener for both teams Saturday evening at the Foxboro Sports Center.

The host Skyhawks (1-0) grabbed a 1-0 first period lead on senior Cameron Wright’s (West Dummerston, Vt.) power play goal, but the visiting Corsairs (0-1) evened matters 3:29 into the middle stanza on senior Steven Leonard’s (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) power play tally.  Freshman John Peloso (Townshend, Vt.) gave Stonehill a 2-1 cushion after 40 minutes of play with a marker midway through the second period, and Raei extended that margin to 3-1 3:46 into the third frame.  Senior Cameron Mack (Long Beach, Calif.) sliced UMass Dartmouth’s deficit in half with 7:37 to play, and Leonard’s second goal of the night with 3:21 remaining in regulation forced the extra session and set up Raei’s late heroics.

Wright added two assists to finish with a three-point night for the Skyhawks, who received three helpers from senior Ryan Meade (Tewksbury, Mass.).  Junior Nicholas Short (Los Angeles, Calif.) collected two assist in the setback for the Corsairs, who received single helpers off the sticks of senior Sean Leonard (Rockaway Park, N.Y.), junior Eric Bolden (Oswego, Ill.), sophomore Griffin Wiencek (Sherwood, Ore.) and freshman Austin Miller (Meridian, Idaho).

Sophomore Chase McKay (New Port Richey, Fla.) picked up the win in goal with a 37-save effort for Stonehill, while freshman Daniel Davidson (Surrey, B.C.) made 21 stops in his collegiate debut for UMass Dartmouth.  The Corsairs outshot the Skyhawks by a 40-25 margin in a contest that saw the teams combine for two power play goals on 12 opportunities.

UMass Dartmouth opens Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Tuesday evening by heading to Framingham State for a league outing that faces off at 7:30 pm, while Stonehill hosts Assumption in its Northeast-10 Conference lid-lifter on Friday evening at the Foxboro Sports Center that faces off at 7:00 pm.
