WORCESTER, Mass. -- Sophomore Brian Smith (Dracut, Mass.) netted a pair of second period goals, as Worcester State overcame a three-goal first period deficit to post a 5-3 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference ice hockey victory over UMass Dartmouth Thursday afternoon at the Worcester Sports Center.
The host Lancers (3-1, 2-0 MASCAC) fell behind by that three-goal margin in the opening 7:23 of the contest, as the visiting Corsairs (1-2, 1-1 MASCAC) received tallies off the sticks of juniors Dillon Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.) and Kai Kapossy (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) along with sophomore Josh Vertentes (Rehoboth, Mass.) to build their early edge. Worcester State closed back to within one on markers from sophomore Will Ahearn (Charlestown, Mass.) and freshman Kevin Drevitch (Oxford, N.J.) in the final 6:40 of the first period, and Smith gave the hosts the lead for good with his two tallies in the opening 7:24 of the middle stanza. Junior Jake Karelas (Melrose, Mass.) provided an insurance goal 6:14 into the final frame for the Lancers to account for the final margin.
Junior Matthew Manning (Novi, Mich.), sophomores Gunther Stange (Niles, Ill.) and Nick Pennucci (Worcester, Mass.) along with freshmen Petr Staif (Zruc-Senec, Czech Republic) and Deiter Stange (Niles, Ill.) added assists on the day for Worcester State, which received a 35-save effort in goal from sophomore Ryan Hoff (Brockton, Mass.). Senior Steven Leonard (Rockaway Park, N.Y.), sophomores Derek Britner (Salem, N.H.) and Griffin Wiencek (Sherwood, Ore.) along with freshmen Michael Perrone (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.), Austin Miller (Meridian, Idaho) and John Grealish (Bakersfield, Calif.) collected helpers in the setback for UMass Dartmouth, which saw sophomore Chris Stangarone (White Plains, N.Y.) stop 20 of 21 shots faced in relief. Freshman Daniel Davidson (Surrey, B.C.) suffered the setback between the pipes for the visitors with four saves in 27-plus minutes of play.
UMass Dartmouth outshot Worcester State by a 38-29 margin overall for the contest, as the Lancers held a 36-27 edge in the face off circle. The teams combined to go 0-for-5 on the power play for the afternoon.
