DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Junior Benjamin Avakian’s (Bourne, Mass.) goal 1:49 into the fourth quarter proved to be the game-winner, as Massachusetts Maritime held off a late charge to post a 7-6 non-league college men’s lacrosse victory over UMass Dartmouth Wednesday evening at Cressy Field.
The visiting Buccaneers (5-5) overcame an early 1-0 deficit with four unanswered goals, including two from senior Ted Powers (Marshfield, Mass.), to take a 4-2 advantage at the break, but junior Mike Rizzo’s (Bridgewater, Mass.) tally 6:16 after intermission closed the host Corsairs’ (5-6) deficit to one. Powers and Avakian teamed up for a pair of markers in a 1:42 span to give Massachusetts Maritime a three-goal advantage with 5:41 to play in the third stanza, and after junior Donovan Prozinski (Ashland, Mass.) narrowed that gap to two for UMass Dartmouth, Avakian struck again with 13:11 remaining in the match to restore the visitors’ three-goal edge.
That score held up until the final 4:52 of action, as Rizzo sliced the hosts’ deficit to two before sophomore Tim Jordan’s (Sandwich, Mass.) tally with two minutes to play pulled the Corsairs to within one. The Buccaneers won the ensuing faceoff but turned the ball over with just over a minute to play, as UMass Dartmouth had a chance to even matters before turning the ball over on the ensuing possession, enabling the visitors to run out the clock and escape with their triumph.
Powers netted a hat trick and an assist to finish with four points on the night for Massachusetts Maritime, which received a hat trick from Avakian along with a goal from junior Franklin Ragge (Scituate, Mass.). Juniors Casey Fisher (Nashua, N.H.) and Brendan Kelley (Drexel Hill, Pa.), along with freshman Spencer Jones (Hyannis, Mass.), collected assists for the Buccaneers, who held a 36-30 edge in total shots (24-22 on goal) and a 14-3 advantage in the face-off circle for the contest.
Rizzo notched a hat trick in the setback for UMass Dartmouth, which received a pair of tallies and an assist from Prozinski along with a marker and helper off the stick of Jordan. Sophomore Josh Souza (Sandwich, Mass.) recorded a pair of assists on the evening for the Corsairs, who forced 21 turnovers and picked up 37 ground balls.
Senior Michael Dolan (McLean, Va.) earned his fifth win of the season with a 16-save effort (four each in quarter) in goal for the Buccaneers, while junior Ted McCaffery (Pepperell, Mass.) made 17 stops (including 10 in the first half alone) in the setback for UMass Dartmouth.
UMass Dartmouth heads to Gorham, Maine on Saturday afternoon to take on Southern Maine in a Little East Conference outing beginning at 3:00 pm, while Massachusetts Maritime hosts Springfield in a New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference clash on Saturday afternoon in Buzzards Bay, Mass. that begins at Noon.
