WATERFORD, Conn. -- Both UMass Dartmouth cross country teams tuned up for the upcoming Little East Conference Championships on Saturday afternoon at the Connecticut College Invitational that took place at Harkness Park, as the Corsair men placed 25th and the Corsair women finished 28th in the competition.
Sophomore Steve Stromski (Melrose, Mass.) set the pace on the men’s side, as he placed 150th in a field of 409 runners with a time of 26:35.5 over the 8K layout. Freshman Austin Carroll (Norton, Mass.) and senior Travis Dolcine (Somerville, Mass.) were next with respective 168th and 285th place performances of 26:43.8 and 28:11.7, while freshman Vincent Gardner (Portsmouth, R.I.) and sophomore Okan Canaran (Lakeville, Mass.) rounded out UMass Dartmouth’s scoring with 328th and 358th place times of 28:52.9 and 29:34.0. Williams took top honors in the event with a score of 47 points, while MIT (96) and Rensselaer (149) followed in the runner-up and third place spots.
Junior Jennifer Jackson (Harwich, Mass.) led the way in the women’s race for the Corsairs, as she covered the 6K layout in a time of 25:58.8 to finish 287th in a field of 365 competitors. Senior Victoria Spitaels (West Newton, Mass.) and graduate student Kira Judd (Garrettsville, Ohio) were next with respective 290th and 315th place times of 26:02.8 and 26:43.1, while junior Stephanie Brogdon (Chelmsford, Mass.) and sophomore Jackie Broderick (Wilmington, Mass.) rounded out UMass Dartmouth’s scoring with 328th and 330th place finishing times of 27:04.2 and 27:22.8. MIT captured the team title with a score of 75 points, as Williams (103) and Tufts (121) claimed the runner-up and third place positions.
UMass Dartmouth will host the 2019 Little East Championships on Saturday, November 2nd on the Bob Dowd Course, as the men’s race begins at 11:00 am followed by the women’s race at Noon.
