KEENE, N.H. -- Both UMass Dartmouth cross country teams recorded strong performances at the Keene State Invitational on Saturday afternoon, as the Corsair men placed third and the Corsair women finished 13th in a field of 19 teams competing in the event.
Junior Bruno Pires (New Bedford, Mass.) set the pace on the men’s side for UMass Dartmouth, as he covered the 8K layout in a fifth place individual time of 26:24.6 in a field of 193 runners. Freshman Jadiel Pinales (Lowell, Mass.) and sophomore Steve Stromski (Melrose, Mass.) were next with respective 12th and 14th place times of 26:45.7 and 26:50.4, while freshman Austin Carroll (Norton, Mass.) and senior Travis Dolcine (Somerville, Mass.) rounded out the Corsair scoring with times of 26:59.8 and 27:48.8 that were good for 19th and 44th place, respectively. Williams took top honors in the event with a score of 54 points, as Brandeis finished five points ahead of UMass Dartmouth (83-88) to grab the runner-up position.
Junior Taylor Walsh (Groveland, Mass.) set the pace once again on the women’s side for the Corsairs, as she covered the 5K course in a time of 19:22.5 that was good for 24th place in a field of 185 competitors. Senior Jess O’Reilly (Millis, Mass.) and sophomore Jackie Broderick (Wilmington, Mass.) followed with respective 26th and 102nd place times of 19:23.6 and 21.19.8, while junior Jennifer Jackson (Harwich, Mass.) and senior Victoria Spitaels (West Newton, Mass.) rounded out UMass Dartmouth’s scoring with times of 21:25.6 and 21:50.2 that were good for 108th and 121st place, respectively. Williams claimed the team crown with a score of 37 points, while Wellesley (75) and Brandeis (131) finished in the runner-up and third place spots.
Both UMass Dartmouth squads return to action on Saturday, October 19th by heading to New London, Conn. to participate in the Connecticut College Invitational, as the men’s race begins at 11:00 am followed by the women’s race at 12:15 pm.
