SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Senior Julia Quinn (Fryeburg, Maine) scored 18 points to lead three players in double figures, as Saint Joseph’s (Maine) overcame a six-point halftime deficit to notch a 65-54 victory over UMass Dartmouth in second round play of the Springfield Hampton Inn Naismith Classic Thursday afternoon at Blake Arena.
The Monks (7-5) trailed 29-23 at the break before opening the second half on a 7-0 run, as senior Lexi L’Heureux-Carland’s (Bridgton, Maine) lay-in 3:38 after intermission staked Saint Joseph’s to a 30-29 edge. Senior Ashley Brown’s (New Bedford, Mass.) three-pointer with 2:38 to play in the third quarter forged a 37-37 tie for the Corsairs (7-4), but the Monks used a Quinn jumper and a three-pointer from junior Jordan Jabar (Waterville, Maine) to take a 42-37 lead into the final frame.
Saint Joseph’s quickly scored the first six points of the fourth stanza to cap an 11-0 run and grab an eight-point cushion (48-37) on Quinn’s conventional three-point play, but UMass Dartmouth responded with a 7-0 run of its own capped by Brown’s conventional three-point play with 5:35 remaining. The Monks scored their next 13 points at the foul line in building a late 10-point advantage, as the Corsairs got to within six (58-52) on a pair of Brown free throws with 37 seconds to play but crept no closer.
Sophomore Alyson Fillion (Bedford, N.H.) added 17 points (including five three-pointers) and six rebounds in the win for Saint Joseph’s, which received 10 points and six boards from junior Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.). Jabar added eight points and five caroms for the Monks, who shot 40 percent (18-45) from the field and connected for eight three-pointers while holding a 21-13 scoring edge at the foul line for the afternoon.
Brown delivered a game-high 24 points, 10 rebounds, eight steals and three assists in a near triple-double performance in the setback for UMass Dartmouth, which received a double-double effort of 12 points and 10 boards from sophomore Shaelyn Carreiro (Fall River, Mass.). Junior Lauren Empey (Middleboro, Mass.) chipped in with 12 points and six caroms for the Corsairs, who shot 31 percent (19-62) from the floor but hurt themselves with 18 turnovers on the day. Brown and Fillion earned respective spots on the all-tournament team for their efforts in the two-day event.
UMass Dartmouth travels to Medford, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on top-ranked Tufts in a non-league outing that tips-off at 2:00 pm, while Saint Joseph’s hosts Worcester State in a non-league matchup on Tuesday evening in Standish, Maine that tips-off at 5:30 pm.
