Women's Basketball Suffers 80-63 New Year's Setback At Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. --  Senior Emily Jacques (Auburn, Maine) notched a double-double effort of 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead Springfield to an 80-63 victory over UMass Dartmouth in first round play of the 2020 Springfield Hampton Inn Naismith Classic Wednesday afternoon at Blake Arena.

The host Pride (7-5) raced out to an 18-5 advantage before settling for a 10-point cushion (24-14) after the opening quarter of action, and Springfield netted the first seven points of the second stanza to extend that margin to 17 points (31-14) on sophomore Stephanie Lyons’s (Boston, Mass.) lay-in 1:29 into the frame.  The visiting Corsairs (7-3) closed the quarter on a 19-7 run capped by senior Kayla McMahon’s (Hanover, Mass.) lay-in at the buzzer to creep back to within eight (41-33) at the break, and sophomore Shaelyn Carreiro’s (Fall River, Mass.) three-pointer on the opening possession after intermission whittled UMass Dartmouth’s deficit down to five (41-36).

Jacques and senior Alex Goslin (South Windsor, Conn.) each scored eight points to help ignite a decisive 23-4 Pride run over the final 7:50 of the third quarter that gave Springfield a 65-41 advantage heading into the final frame, and the hosts extended that margin to as much as 27 points in the closing 10 minutes of play.

Freshman Sam Hourihan (Bridgewater, Mass.) added a double-double performance of 20 points, 12 rebounds and three assists in the win for the Pride, who also received a double-double effort of 15 points, 10 boards, three assists and three steals from Goslin.  Springfield shot 40 percent (30-76) from the field and used a 53-33 rebounding advantage to score 29 second chance points on the day.

Sophomore Jessica Carroll (Deep River, Conn.) led five players in double figures with 14 points in the setback for UMass Dartmouth, which received 12 points from junior Lauren Empey (Middleboro, Mass.).  McMahon added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Corsairs, who received 11 points from Carreiro along with 10 points, six boards, four assists and a pair of steals from senior Ashley Brown (New Bedford, Mass.).  The visitors shot 41 percent (23-56) from the floor on the afternoon, as each team connected for four three-pointers.

UMass Dartmouth takes on Saint Joseph’s (Maine) in second round play of the Springfield Hampton Inn/Naismith Classic on Thursday afternoon at Blake Arena that tips-off at 1:00 pm, while Springfield squares off with Roger Williams in its second round outing Thursday at 3:00 pm.
