DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Junior Jillian Danton’s (Arlington, Mass.) goal with 8:16 remaining lifted Salem State to a 1-0 Little East Conference field hockey victory over UMass Dartmouth Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The teams battled through three scoreless quarters before Danton converted a pass from freshman Mikayla Mason (Beverly, Mass.) on the deciding tally for the host Vikings (7-5, 4-4 LEC), and sophomore Kelli McCarthy (Foxboro, Mass.) made that stand up with a six-save performance in goal to pick up the shutout triumph.
Junior Katelyn Banalewicz (Fall River, Mass.) made a pair of stops in suffering the tough-luck setback in net for the visiting Corsairs (4-8, 2-5 LEC), as UMass Dartmouth outshot Salem State by an 8-6 margin overall (6-3 on goal) and held a 18-4 advantage in penalty corners for the contest.
UMass Dartmouth hosts Westfield State in a Little East Conference outing on Tuesday evening at Cressy Field beginning at 7:00 pm, while Salem State travels to Plymouth, N.H. on Tuesday evening for a Little East clash with Plymouth State that also begins at 7:00 pm.
