DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Sophomore Sarah Vieira’s (Dartmouth, Mass.) golden goal 8:50 into overtime lifted UMass Dartmouth to a 2-1 non-league college women’s soccer victory over Bridgewater State Tuesday evening at Cressy Field.
Vieira converted a crossing pass from fellow sophomore Jillian Prout (Dartmouth, Mass.) and tucked her first tally of the season into the right corner for the host Corsairs (2-9), who overcame an early deficit after sophomore Madelyn Morin (East Longmeadow, Mass.) had staked the visiting Bears (5-6) to a 1-0 edge just 1:12 into the contest with an unassisted marker. Senior Ella Rath (Pawcatuck, Conn.) evened matters for UMass Dartmouth in the 34th minute of action when she took a Prout pass and broke in for her fifth goal of the season, and that score held up until the extra session that ended with Vieira’s heroics.
Junior Jaimee O’Brien (West Springfield, Mass.) picked up the win in goal with a three save effort for the Corsairs, who received a pair of team saves on the goal line in the opening half. Senior Kellie Souza (Wilmington, Mass.) recorded four stops in net in the setback for Bridgewater State, which held a 10-9 edge in total shots and a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks for the contest.
UMass Dartmouth hosts Southern Maine in a Little East Conference outing on Saturday afternoon at Cressy Field beginning at 1:00 pm, while Bridgewater State entertains Wentworth in a non-league clash on Thursday afternoon in Bridgewater, Mass. that begins at 3:30 pm.
