MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Freshman Lauren Talbot (Windham, Maine) rapped out a pair of hits and drove in three runs to lead UMass Dartmouth to a 5-2 victory over Eastern Connecticut in the opening game of a Little East Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Clyde Washburne Field. The host Warriors received three hits and an RBI each from junior Sara Pisanelli (Wallingford, Conn.) and freshman Julia SanGiovanni (East Haven, Conn.) in the nightcap to post a 7-2 triumph and gain a split of the twinbill.
Eastern Connecticut (12-4, 3-1 LEC) took a 2-0 third inning lead in the opener on sophomore Alexis Tyrell’s (Torrington, Conn.) two-run single, but UMass Dartmouth (10-10, 3-1 LEC) cut that margin in half on Talbot’s RBI single in the top of the fifth before using a decisive four-run sixth inning rally to take the lead for good. Freshman Lindsay Chubbuck (Berkley, Mass.) evened matters with a run-scoring single, and sophomore Jill Richards (Kingston, Mass.) forced in the go-ahead run by drawing a bases loaded walk before Talbot provided some insurance with a two-run single to close out the scoring.
Junior Cierra Sheerin (Bridgewater, Mass.) joined Talbot with two hits each as part of a nine-hit attack in the opening triumph for the Corsairs, who received a double off the bat of sophomore Kylie Fletcher (Dighton, Mass.). Richards went the distance inside the circle for the visitors, as she scattered six hits and recorded a strikeout to pick up her third win of the spring. Tyrell and Pisanelli each had two hits in the lid-lifter for the Warriors, as junior Haleigh Cardello (Litchfield, N.H.) allowed six hits and four runs over five-plus innings inside the circle to fall to 2-2 on the season.
Eastern Connecticut got all of the runs they would need in the nightcap with a four-run first inning outburst, as RBI singles from San Giovanni and senior Jackie Lewis (Mystic, Conn.) sandwiched a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman Brooke Matyasovsky (Orange, Conn.) to account for three tallies and an error allowed the fourth run to score. Lewis extended that margin to 5-0 in the third when she scored on a fielder’s choice, but UMass Dartmouth got on the board in the top of the fourth when Talbot drove in her fourth run of the day with a groundout and sophomore Leah Major (Fairhaven, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch. The Warriors iced their triumph by answering with two tallies in the bottom of the frame, as Pisanelli’s solo homer and an infield single by Tyrell accounted for the final margin.
Tyrell and Matyasovsky added two hits each as part of a 14-hit second game attack for Eastern Connecticut, as junior Morgan Sanson (Thomaston, Conn.) earned her second win in three decisions with 3 2/3 innings of two-hit scoreless relief. Freshman Autumn Medeiros (Swansea, Mass.) laced a double in the nightcap setback for the Corsairs, as freshman Anna Kerwood (Florence, Mass.) allowed three earned runs to fall to 3-3 on the spring.
