Softball Drops Non-League Twinbill Decision At Framingham State

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. --  Sophomore Victoria Ziner’s (Easton, Mass.) RBI double in the bottom of the fifth plated the game-winning run as Framingham State completed a sweep of a non-league college softball doubleheader from UMass Dartmouth with a 5-4 nightcap triumph Tuesday afternoon at Maple Street Field.  The host Rams (5-7) received a two-run homer from junior Kaylea Sherman (North Attleboro, Mass.) as part of a four-run fourth inning rally to notch a 7-2 victory in the opener.

The two teams traded third inning runs in the lid-lifter before the visiting Corsairs (9-9) took a 2-1 lead on freshman Lauren Talbot’s (Windham, Maine) RBI groundout in the top of the fourth, but Sherman’s round-tripper gave Framingham State the lead for good and was followed by a run-scoring double from sophomore Camille Desrochers (Westford, Mass.) and an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Grace Caughey (Mendon, Mass.).  The hosts closed out the first game scoring with sixth inning sacrifice flies from Caughey and junior Mycala Moody (North Attleboro, Mass.), as Desrochers, junior Kirsten Dick (Tewksbury, Mass.) and freshman Farrah Adam (West Springfield, Mass.) each had two hits to highlight a 10-hit attack.  Senior Kelsi Gunarathne (North Providence, R.I.) picked up the win inside the circle for the Rams, as she allowed an earned run and fanned six to improve to 2-4 on the season.

Sophomore Leah Major (Fairhaven, Mass.) and freshmen Averi Soares (New Bedford, Mass.) & Lindsay Chubbuck (Berkley, Mass.) each rapped out singles in the opening setback for UMass Dartmouth, as sophomore Jill Richards (Kingston, Mass.) went 3 1/3 frames inside the circle for the Corsairs.

Framingham State took a 1-0 edge in the second inning of the nightcap on Dick’s sacrifice fly, but senior Maddie O’Gryzek’s (Norfolk, Mass.) RBI triple in the top of the third knotted the score for UMass Dartmouth.  The Rams responded with a pair of tallies in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 lead on senior Lauren Salisbury’s (Cranston, R.I.) fielders’ choice and an RBI single off the bat of freshman Laela Pepin (Acushnet, Mass.), but the Corsairs took advantage of two errors in the top of the fourth to plate three runs for a 4-3 advantage, setting up Ziner’s fifth inning heroics for the hosts.

Pepin collected two of Framingham State’s six nightcap hits, as Caughey allowed an unearned run and recorded a strikeout over five innings to earn the win inside the circle.  Gunarathne tossed two scoreless frames to pick up the save for the Rams, her first of the spring.  Chubbuck and sophomore Kylie Fletcher (Dighton, Mass.) each rapped out doubles as part of a five-hit second game attack for UMass Dartmouth, as freshman Anna Kerwood (Florence, Mass.) suffered the setback in relief for the Corsairs after going the final 3 1/3 innings with a strikeout.

UMass Dartmouth heads to Mansfield, Conn. on Saturday afternoon to take on Eastern Connecticut in a Little East Conference doubleheader that begins at 1:00 pm, while Framingham State entertains Lesley in a non-league twinbill on Thursday afternoon at Maple Street Field beginning at 3:00 pm.
