DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Junior Alexis Brown (Malden, Mass.) tossed a no-hitter with four strikeouts as fourth-seeded Southern Maine posted a 4-0 victory over top-seeded UMass Dartmouth in second round play of the 2019 Little East Conference Softball Championships Friday morning at the UMD Softball Complex.
The Huskies, who improved to 22-17 with the triumph, were eliminated from the tournament later in the day after dropping a 6-0 decision to second-seeded Plymouth State. The Corsairs, who fall to 23-17 with the setback, will square off with fifth-seeded UMass Boston in an elimination round game that will begin at 11:30 am on Saturday morning at the UMD Softball Complex. The two UMass squads were set to play on Friday before rain pushed the contest until tomorrow.
Brown worked around three walks in recording her no-hitter, as she overcame a pair of errors in the field while allowing only one runner to reach third base. Brown induced nine fly outs and seven ground ball outs to improve to 11-6 for Southern Maine, which received RBI singles from junior Erin Martin (Biddeford, Maine) and freshman Kaitlyn Martin (Guildhall, Vt.) in the third inning along with run-scoring singles off the bats of junior Ashley Tinsman (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and sophomore Hannah Kenney (Oxford, Maine) in the sixth.
Sophomore Jill Richards (Kingston, Mass.), the first of three UMass Dartmouth hurlers on the day, suffered the setback inside the circle by allowing four hits and the first two Husky runs.
Saturday’s other set contest will pit Plymouth State against third-seeded Eastern Connecticut, which stands at 2-0 in the tournament after blanking UMass Boston by a 3-0 margin on Friday.
