DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Both UMass Dartmouth swimming & diving teams recorded their first dual-meet victories of the season on Saturday afternoon at the Tripp Natatorium, as the Corsair men topped Elms by a 218-45 margin while the Corsair women bested the Blazers by a 153-87 final.
Seniors Stephen Barrett (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Kyle MacKenzie (Londonderry, N.H.) each recorded a pair of wins on the men’s side for UMass Dartmouth, as Barrett took top honors in the 100 (52.31) and 200 yard (1:55.68) freestyle while MacKenzie triumphed in the 200 yard butterfly (2:13.92) and 500 yard freestyle (5:19.67). Junior Cameron DiBenedetto (East Freetown, Mass.) and freshman James Shaw (North Chelmsford, Mass.) were also double winners for the hosts, as DiBenedetto claimed crowns in the 50 (27.70) and 200 yard (2:12.98) backstroke while Shaw was victorious in the 50 yard freestyle (24.94) and 50 yard breaststroke (33.74).
Freshman Jonathan Colascione (West Islip, N.Y.) finished first in the mixed 1000 yard freestyle (11:16.59) and 100 yard individual medley (1:04.82) for the Corsairs, while junior Dodhy Saint-Amand (Brockton, Mass.) swept the one (169.50) and three meter (200.70) diving competitions. Junior Justin Chung (Roslindale, Mass.) took top honors in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:24.12) for UMass Dartmouth, which also won both relay events on the afternoon. The tandem of DiBenedetto, Chung, MacKenzie and sophomore Eric Worden (Portland, Maine) took the title in the 400 yard medley relay (3:53.73), while the quartet of MacKenzie, DiBenedetto, sophomore Nathan Motisi (Ellington, Conn.) and freshman Devon Foster (Northbridge, Mass.) finished first in the 400 yard freestyle relay (3:31.99).
Freshman Morgan Beebe (Ellington, Conn.) set the pace on the women’s side with three event wins on the day for UMass Dartmouth, as she took top honors in the 50 (30.35) and 200 yard butterfly (2:30.70) as well as the 100 yard individual medley (1:09.62). Senior Sarah Murphy (Braintree, Mass.) and freshman Danielle Klash (Gardner, Mass.) each recorded a pair of victories for the Corsairs, as Murphy claimed titles in the 50 yard breaststroke (36.27) and 500 yard freestyle (5:44.38) while Klash copped crowns in the 100 (1:02.31) and 200 yard (2:11.66) freestyle.
Senior Kayla Lovy (Londonderry, N.H.) and junior Tara Clark (Southgate, Mich.) posted respective triumphs in the 50 yard backstroke (34.04) and 200 yard breaststroke (2:52.65) for the hosts, who were also victorious in both relay events in the competition. The quartet of Murphy, Beebe, Lovy and freshman Katherine Ferri (Springfield, Mass.) took the title in the 400 yard medley relay (4:35.16), while the tandem of Murphy, Ferri, Lovy and Klash took top honors in the 400 yard freestyle relay (4:10.76) for the Corsairs.
Both UMass Dartmouth squads travel to Worcester, Mass. next Saturday afternoon to square off with Clark in dual-meet action beginning at 1:00 pm, while Elms will entertain Bridgewater State in a pair of dual-meet next Saturday morning in Chicopee, Mass. that begin at 11:00 am.
