Welcome to UMass Dartmouth Sport Medicine

Mission Statement

Athletic trainers are health care professionals who specialize in preventing, recognizing, managing and rehabilitating injuries that result from physical activity.  The athletic trainer works under the direction of a licensed physician to comprise the Sports Medicine Department.  As part of a complete health care team, the sports medicine staff works in cooperation with other health care professionals, athletics administrators, coaches and parents to provide personalized, comprehensive, and effective health care that focuses on the student-athlete.  The services delivered can be broken down into three primary categories: injury prevention, management of athletic injuries, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. These three categories are combined to ensure that the student-athlete's return to competition is done in a thorough, timely, and most importantly, safe manner.  The underlying philosophy for this department is that the medical needs of the student-athlete will always be the first consideration for all members of our staff.  Staff members will help to create an atmosphere that is dedicated to a hard work ethic, and the responsible practices of Sports Medicine. Staff members will demonstrate passion towards the field of athletic training and strive for increasing professional development. The sports medicine staff members will conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times, following the standards and practices of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Athletic Training Room, the institution, and the National Athletic Trainers Association.

Medical Paperwork Timeline for the 2020-21 Academic Year:

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the Sports Medicine staff, Athletics Department and the university are in the process of determining requirements needed for a safe return for the upcoming school year and athletic seasons.  Once these have been determined, instructions will be placed on the medical clearance page on the Athletic Department's Sports Medicine page.  We hope to have these requirments established soon.

If you have already submitted online or physical paperwork for the upcoming year, you may need to resubmit this information along with new requirements included.

Please understand that this is an unprecented time that has caused us to re-evaluate all aspects of Athletics.  During this time, we ask you to be patient, as we continue to develop the safest and most effective way to get you back playing as soon as possible.

Thank you and be safe!!!!
